Department Overview
The Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering (CEE) has 39 full-time faculty members dedicated to the education of more than 300 undergraduate students and 350 graduate students. CEE at Berkeley prepares students for leadership roles in the civil and environmental engineering field, whether in a professional or academic career.
The CEE laboratories for teaching and research are among the best in the nation, providing opportunities for hands-on experience for all students.
CEE’s doctoral program tops the 2010 National Research Council rankings. US News & World Report’s rankings for 2015 has CEE’s graduate programs in both civil engineering and environmental engineering as #1. Environmental engineering has held the #1 spot for the past 6 years; civil engineering has been in the top 2 for the past 12 years.
USN&WR ranked CEE’s environmental engineering undergraduate program #1 in the nation for 2015; civil is ranked #3.
Undergraduate Program
CEE’s undergraduate program offers opportunities for rigorous academic learning, fellowship, hands-on experience, and leadership. Classes are relatively small, so students get to know both the faculty and fellow students.
CEE’s four-year curriculum leads to an ABET-accredited B.S. degree in civil engineering. The program provides students with a strong fundamental background in engineering science, design, and practice.
Undergraduates at Berkeley have opportunities for professional interactions and community service. CEE has active student chapters of the American Society of Civil Engineers and the national honor society Chi Epsilon as well as five nationally-ranked competition teams.
Information is available in the CEE Student Affairs Office, 750 Davis Hall, and on the CEE web site.
This program is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET, http://www.abet.org.

Notes
1 The Humanities/Social Sciences (H/SS) requirement includes two approved reading and composition courses and four additional approved courses, with which a number of specific conditions must be satisfied. Reading and Composition “A” and “B” must be completed by no later than the end of the sophomore year. The remaining courses may be taken at any time during the program. See coesandbox.berkeley.edu/hss for complete details and a list of approved courses.
2 Bio 1B or CE 70
3 Chem 4A is intended for students majoring in Chemistry or a closely-related field.
4 CE 11 or CE 70. If CE 70 was taken in the freshman year students must take CE 11. <3> indicates this requirement is taken in either the fall or spring (not both). CE 11 is offered in Spring. CE 70 in Fall.
5 Choose one of: Chem 1B, 4B; Physics 7C
6 Choose four from this category: CE 103, 111, 120, 155, 167, 175, 191
7 Choose one from this category: CE 105, 112, 122N plus 122L, 123N plus 123L, 153, 177, 180, 186. Note that for the courses listed in this category that are 4 units, one of the four units can be applied toward the 15 unit engineering electives requirement.
8 Engineering electives must include at least 15 additional units of upper-division technically oriented engineering coursework offered in the College of Engineering or in Chemical Engineering. The 15 units of engineering electives cannot include: any course taken on a P/NP basis; BioE 100; CS C79, 195, H195; Engin 125, 130AC, 140, 157AC; IEOR 172, 185, 186, 190 series, 191, 192; ME 106, 190K, 191K; Chem E 185.
9 Choose one of: E 115; ME 40, 104
* A minimum of 120 units is required for graduation.
