Productive faculty-staff partnerships
The EMPOWER program consists of multiple modules, with each module made up of a series of workshops. The program is designed to support faculty, staff and students who want to foster an inclusive climate by actively promoting practices that advance equity for all members of our engineering community. Below is information on the Productive Faculty-Staff Partnerships module.
Target audience: Faculty and staff
Contacts: Chaniqua Butscher, inclusive excellence programs manager; Grace O’Connell, associate dean for inclusive excellence
Workshop 1: Raising our awareness of working dynamics between faculty and staff
Thursday, Sep. 23, 1-3 p.m. via Zoom
In Workshop 1, Berkeley Interactive Theater will present a new dramatic scenario developed in collaboration with Berkeley Engineering. Participants will have the opportunity to analyze issues of classism, status and faculty-staff power dynamics, and to recommit to the process of creating a culture of inclusion and belonging that improves the productivity, quality and efficiency of our shared work.
Workshop 2: Practicing what we learn about cultivating positive working relationships
Thursday, Oct. 7, 1-3 p.m. via Zoom
In Workshop 2, we will present evidence on the different ways that unconscious bias, privilege and classism can influence the campus climate and working relationship between faculty and staff. The workshop will also address how such biases can impact the quality, productivity, efficiency and inclusivity of our shared work.
Workshop 3: Owning the process of quality and efficiency through inclusion and belonging
Thursday, Oct. 21, 1-3 p.m. via Zoom
During Workshop 3, participants will have the opportunity to discuss specific strategies to improve communication and collaboration between faculty and staff to create the conditions for sustained excellence in research, teaching and service for the public good, as well as a more satisfying university experience in the near-term.
