Minors

Declaring a minor to your engineering major is like ordering something on the side — it’s not a full course, but it can make the meal even better. Minors are areas of concentration requiring fewer courses than an undergraduate major. They’re optional, but can provide further depth or breadth to your Berkeley education.

The College of Engineering does not offer additional time to complete a minor, though with careful course planning, it’s usually not required. Students are encouraged to meet with their Engineering Student Services adviser to discuss the feasibility of completing their intended minor within their current academic plans. Please note that if you are pursuing a minor in the College of Engineering, no more than one upper division course can overlap with your major. If you’re interested in pursuing a minor, you should consult the sponsoring department for the appropriate forms and further instructions.

Deadline to declare a minor

Students interested in pursuing a minor must declare the minor prior to the first day of classes of their Expected Graduation Term (EGT). If a student’s EGT is summer, the student must declare the minor prior to the first day of classes for summer session A. To declare a minor, contact an advisor in the department that offers the minor for information on eligibility requirements.

Minors in the College of Engineering

College of Engineering minors are generally open to all students at Berkeley who are not pursuing a major in the same field. The following are currently offered:

  • Aerospace Engineering
  • Bioengineering
  • Computer Science
  • Electrical Engineering & Computer Sciences
  • Electronic Intelligent Systems
  • Energy Engineering
  • Environmental Engineering
  • Geoengineering
  • Industrial Engineering & Operations Research
  • Materials Science & Engineering
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Nuclear Engineering
  • Structural Engineering

Minors in other schools or colleges

You might also want to consider a minor in another school or college. Please note that you are subject to the overlap rules of the college or school offering the minor program. The following groups, schools and colleges offer minor programs:

  • College of Chemistry
  • College of Environmental Design
  • College of Letters & Science: In the Berkeley Academic Guide, choose filters for Minors and College of Letters & Science
  • Rausser College of Natural Resources
  • Energy & Resources Group
  • Graduate School of Education
  • Goldman School of Public Policy
  • Graduate School of Journalism
