New UCSD dean
Albert Pisano (Photo by Peg Skorpinski)Albert P. Pisano, a distinguished member of the Berkeley Engineering faculty who has taught a generation of Berkeley engineers in his 30 years on campus, began a new position as dean of the Jacobs School of Engineering at UC San Diego on September 1.
At Berkeley, Pisano held the FANUC Chair of Mechanical Systems; he was also a professor of electrical engineering and computer sciences. He had served as chair of the Department of Mechanical Engineering and acting dean of the college. In 2001, he was elected to the National Academy of Engineering for his work on micro-electromechanical systems (MEMs).
At a farewell party in August, Dean S. Shankar Sastry presented Pisano with the Berkeley Citation, the highest campus honor, given to those whose attainments significantly exceed the standards of excellence in their fields and whose contributions to UC Berkeley are above and beyond the call of duty.
“Those who know me know that I am seldom without words,” said Pisano in accepting the award, “but this honor has left me speechless.”
