Ernest Kuh, professor and dean emeritus, 1928-2015

June 30, 2015

Ernest S. Kuh, who greatly expanded the College of Engineering’s partnerships with its alumni and industry networks while serving as dean in the 1970s, died Saturday at age 86.

Kuh joined the Berkeley faculty in 1956 and, in an internationally prominent research and teaching career, made pioneering contributions in electronic design automation of integrated circuits. He served as chair of the Department of Electrical Engineering & Computer Sciences from 1968 to 1972 and then as dean of the college from 1973 to 1980. He was instrumental in establishing the college as a leader in engineering education.

Kuh was a member of the National Academy of Engineering, Academia Sinica and the Chinese Academy of Sciences. His numerous awards and honors include the IEEE Centennial and Millennium Medals, EDAC Phil Kaufman Award and Silicon Valley Engineering Council Hall of Fame.

A complete obituary will be published shortly.
