Campus announcement: Sastry stepping down as engineering dean
Sastry has led Berkeley Engineering for the past decade. His tenure has been defined by the creation of innovative new academic programs and institutes, which focus on preparing students for leadership roles integrating technology, design and entrepreneurship. Sastry also helped grow the college’s substantial research programs, launching more than a dozen major institutes and centers. An alumnus with three graduate degrees from Berkeley, Sastry forged a special relationship with alumni and donors. Through the leadership and generosity of the college’s benefactors, the average annual level of private giving more than doubled during his tenure, providing pivotal resources to support the college’s new initiatives and core programs.
“My years as Dean have given me great optimism and excitement about the ever-growing potential of Berkeley Engineering. I believe that we are poised to play a leadership role in inventing the future,” Sastry wrote in an email to the college’s students and faculty.
