Berkeley engineers among new faculty elected to AAAS

April 18, 2018

Berkeley Engineering researchers Eric Brewer and James Demmel are among nine UC Berkeley faculty members elected today to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, a society founded in 1780 to honor exceptional scholars, scientists, artists and innovators from around the world.

Brewer is a professor emeritus of computer sciences and vice president of infrastructure at Google. He is widely considered among the most influential architects of the Internet, leading research on scalable servers, search engines, network infrastructure, sensor networks and security.

Demmel has joint appointments in electrical engineering and computer sciences and in math, and is chair of EECS. He is known for his innovative research in developing adaptive, high-performance linear algorithm software, and for his leadership in computational science and numerical algorithms.

The academy, which has included such notable members as Alexander Hamilton, Charles Darwin, Albert Einstein, Robert Frost and Martin Luther King Jr., announced the election of 213 new members. The new class will be inducted in October 2018 at a ceremony in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
