Iain Clark selected as Innovation Investigator by Arc Institute

Berkeley Engineering professor awarded $1M to pursue “curiosity-driven” research
September 20, 2023 by Marni Ellery

Iain Clark, assistant professor of bioengineering, was named an Innovation Investigator by the Arc Institute, a scientific research organization pioneering new models for scientific discovery and translation. As a member of the inaugural Innovation Investigators program, Clark will receive $1 million over five years to pursue “curiosity-driven, ambitious research.”

Clark was among nine researchers selected from the Arc Institute’s founding partner universities — Stanford University, UC Berkeley and UCSF — to receive this honor. His lab is currently focused on understanding how HIV evades the immune system and elucidating cellular interactions that control neurologic diseases.

Founded in 2021, the Arc Institute serves as a new model for collaborative research, uniting world-class research with unconstrained funding to enable new discoveries that improve human health. Through its Innovation Investigators program, the Arc Institute aims to provide leading researchers like Clark with the tools and resources to “undertake research beyond the scope of what’s typically feasible in traditional academic environments.”
