Eight students honored as Siebel Scholars

October 11, 2023 by Caitlin Kelley

Eight UC Berkeley students were honored as Siebel Scholars Foundation’s class of 2024. The graduate students — five from bioengineering and three from computer science — are counted among 83 distinguished honorees advancing research across disciplines.

The scholars program awards grants of $35,000 to select students at 16 universities in the United States, China, France, Italy and Japan. Honorees are chosen on the basis of outstanding academic achievement and demonstrated leadership, and these students rank in the top 5% of their class on average.

“We are proud that these exceptional students earned such a prestigious honor,” said Tsu-Jae King Liu, dean and Roy W. Carlson Professor of Engineering at Berkeley. “I look forward to all that they accomplish in their final year at Berkeley Engineering.”

Meet the 2024 class of Siebel Scholars at Berkeley:

  • Cindy Ayala, whose research involves developing novel CEST-MRI sequences for molecular cardiac imaging of low concentration metabolites.
  • Arjun Bhorkar, a founding engineer of a project at Nvidia involving GPU-accelerated computer vision packages for industrial robotics.
  • Ruiming Cao, who is working to incorporate computational science advances into biology.
  • Sita Srinivasan Chandrasekaran, who is developing transcriptome engineering tools.
  • Cameron Tadashi Kato, whose research focuses on muscle tissue and how to restore senescent cell populations to a healthier state.
  • Andre Lai, who is focused on developing microfluidic platforms for single-cell molecular and mechanical phenotyping.
  • Sandeep Mukherjee, whose work applies modern machine learning, artificial intelligence and statistical inference to problems in the natural world.
  • Anish Muthali, who works on developing assurances for “learning-in-the-loop” control systems to certify the safety of autonomous vehicles.
