Sorathan (Mike) Munckong
MEng ’20 BioE
Associate systems engineer, V&V at Insulet
Hometown: Long Beach, CA
Job description
I’m an associate systems engineer on the systems test team at Insulet, and my team works on testing the system as a whole to ensure that it meets our internal product requirements.
Skills learned at Cal
Collaboration with others, although difficult at times, is something that I learned in my MEng program. There is nothing like working with a team full of people who care and take their share of responsibility. I found that at Berkeley, and I am humbled to be working with that team dynamic today.
Book or movie you loved
Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time — it needs to be watched twice at least.
Current food obsession
Putting my backyard garden-grown Thai basil in every stir-fry that I cook. And being Thai is not the only reason why I’m obligated to do this, it tastes great!
Fondest memory from Cal
Trotting over to get boba after a lecture to strap in for hours of working is a gem in my mind — and the impending sadness of the final sip and still having more work to get done.
Advice for your 20-year-old self
Believe that hard work pays off in due time.
What keeps you enthusiastic about your job
The fact that every day I put my effort into making a product that will improve the lives of people with diabetes. For me, people with diabetes isn’t just a vague term — it means people like my partner’s father who is a diabetic and is on pump therapy himself. It brings me great joy to be able to say that I’m working to help him and those like him, and to bring great technology to more folks as well.
