Our mission and values
At Berkeley Engineering, our mission is to educate leaders, create knowledge and serve society. Founded in 1868, we:
- Transform the lives of our students by preparing them to become successful leaders and innovators for positive change.
- Expand knowledge and create transformative technology through original research to tackle the world’s biggest challenges.
- Work toward a transformed society, in which all members can thrive, through service to government, industry and the engineering professions.
At the core of our mission are values that drive us to educate inclusive leaders and create knowledge equitably in service of a diverse society. We invent, design and build solutions for the greater good, and we do this together as a community. Our culture is reflected in the following values, which we believe are key elements of Berkeley Engineering’s success.
Collaboration
The challenges we face in our interconnected world demand solutions born out of diverse perspectives from a cross-section of society. As we build, design, invent and work toward shared goals, we not only seek collaborations with people trained in different fields and disciplines, but also from those who come with different lived experiences.
Innovation
We test assumptions as we discover new technologies. By fostering an environment in which people can challenge the status quo and explore new avenues, we create fertile ground for game-changing innovation.
Excellence
We aim to excel at everything we do, and our excellence is powered by a diverse community and inclusive culture. Students graduate prepared to lead, to advance the state-of-the-art in engineering, to push boundaries. This mindset of reimagining what’s possible extends to our lives outside the labs and classroom.
Societal impact
We embrace our public mission by considering all potential consequences of the technologies we develop. We ensure that our contributions to society will improve people’s lives and help to shape a healthier, more equitable and sustainable future for all.
We are driven to educate inclusive leaders and create knowledge equitably in service of a diverse society
